anti aging skin treatment

Staying young looking for the over 40 crowd has become a multi-million dollar business.  There are anti aging lotions and creams both over-the-counter and doctor prescribed.  But today we’re going to talk about other anti aging skin treatment options.

Chemical Peels are acids, either one or a combination, that are painted on the skin like a mask.  This action in turn peels away the surface layers of the skin.  The peels come in various strengths from light to deep. Light applications are used to improve skin texture and pigmentation.

Medium and deep peels are more effective and more painful.  The recovery is longer and skin can remain red for up to a month.  Citrus peels are being developed that may give better results with less irritation.

Laser Resurfacing allows energy to pass through the top layer of skin and heat only the dermis.  After five treatments a “wound response” produces new skin cells and collagen which erases fine lines.  According to Jeffrey Dover, associate professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine “One treatment can truly make older skin look young again.”  Though more effective, the recovery period (two months) is longer than for a chemical peel.

Radio Frequency Treatment goes by the names of Thermage, ThermaCool or ThermaLift.  These FDA-approved procedures deliver radio frequency energy to the dermis which tightens and lifts the skin.  Mild and temporary swelling may occur but side effects are reportedly rare.  Expect a four to six month wait before you see results however some people report seeing immediate improvement.

Botox is a purified form of bacteria that when injected into the skin, shut down the nerve signals responsible for the muscle contractions that cause wrinkles. One treatment lasts three to four months but wrinkle will return once the treatment stops.

These are just a few of the many anti aging skin treatments available to those who wish to continue their quest for a younger looking appearance.
